Asbestos Exposure

Every year in the United States, nearly 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos. Many construction and industrial workers in the U.S. were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis for years, often remaining unaware of the dangers thanks to negligence on the part of companies that made, distributed, and used asbestos.

The health effects of asbestos exposure include a wide range of respiratory conditions and cancers. Virtually anyone who breathed asbestos dust is at risk of experiencing health complications and being diagnosed with one or more asbestos-related conditions. Victims who have been wrongfully exposed to asbestos are entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering, and the Law Firm of Hossley Embry can help investigate and pursue potential claims.

Asbestos Exposures Usually Occur At:

  • Tire or rubber plants
  • Chemical plants
  • Refineries
  • Paper mills
  • Steel and iron foundries
  • Oil and gas drilling sites
  • Shipyards or on board naval vessels
  • Construction or renovation of commercial buildings
  • Jobs where work is performed near boilers and piping

Unfortunately, workers are not the only ones affected. Asbestos can be carried home on the clothing and personal items of workers, leading to exposure and ill health effects for family members too.

Conditions and Complications Resulting from Asbestos Exposure Include:

  • Malignant Mesothelioma. The most serious and deadly of all asbestos-related diseases, malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon—but no longer rare—cancer that is difficult to diagnose and frequently unresponsive to therapy. Virtually all cases of malignant mesothelioma can be attributed to asbestos exposure.
  • Lung Cancer. This includes any type of cancer where malignant cells originate in the lungs. It is the most common asbestos-related cancer type in present or ex-smokers who have a history of asbestos exposure.
  • Asbestosis. This terms refers to the scarring of lung tissue from inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers. Many doctors lacking a good understanding of asbestos-related diseases tend to use the term “asbestosis” as a buzzword and “catch-all” term for conditions related to asbestos exposure.
  • Pleural Disease. This term refers to any scarring of the pleura, which are the tissues that line the lungs. Presence of pleural disease provides evidence that an individual has experienced enough asbestos exposure to place them at substantial risk for more serious disease.
