The 5 Most Dangerous Products for Children

January 9, 2017 by

It is customary for children to receive lots of toys during the holidays, and it’s easy to assume that if a toy is made for children and advertised to them, it would be safe to play with. Often, that is not the case, however.

Dangerous Products for Children

The following is a list of the 5 most dangerous types of products for children.

  1. Children’s Jewelry
Children’s jewelry—especially when it is made of metal—can be harmful. The materials used to make this jewelry are often cheap and may include toxic metals or substances. Since children tend to put items in their mouths, any toxic substance can cause an injury. Additionally, small parts of the jewelry can break off and pose as a choking hazard.
  2. Toys with Magnets
Any toy with magnets can be extremely dangerous for children at any age—especially if the magnet is small enough to swallow, insert up a nose, or push in an ear. If multiple small magnets are swallowed and attract to each other in the body, they can wreak havoc in the stomach and intestines. Connected magnets are extremely difficult to pass and often require surgery for removal.
  3. Trampolines
While trampolines can be a source of fun, they are also a very real danger to children. Inappropriate play on trampolines can cause severe injuries, including concussions, head and neck injuries, bone fractures, and muscle strains. Some of these injuries have lifelong effects. Owning a trampoline can also cause homeowners insurance issues and be a huge liability for you—especially if someone else’s child gets hurt while using it.
  4. Pets
Sure, a puppy, kitten, or bunny might be cute on Christmas morning—almost as cute as your child’s face lighting up at the sight of the tiny, adorable creature—but the reality is, pets are a lifetime commitment. Puppies are a lot of work, kittens have claws, and bunnies can chew on cords. Pets can be destructive to your house and, if untrained, a threat to your children’s safety. It’s best to wait to get a family pet until you have the time to devote to training and caring for it.
  5. Toys with Projectile Parts
Toys like darts, slingshots, water balloon launchers, nerf guns, and others with projectile parts are not recommended for children. They pose a significant threat to safety and their use should be closely monitored.

We all want what is best for children, and it is our number one priority to keep them safe. Children use toys or have access to things every day that could be dangerous. It’s important to remember that toys can pass safety regulations and still be dangerous to children, and products can be defective without being officially recalled, posing a serious and significant threat to personal safety.
