NHTSA Announces Pirelli Tire Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall beginning in May of 2016 for certain tires made by the car tire manufacturer Pirelli between April 1, 2015 and April 7, 2015.

The affected car tires may not be marked with a date code, the NHTSA said in the recall notice, which means that the tires fail to comply with federal safety standards for motor vehicles.

The missing date code could make the tire difficult to identify in the event of a safety-related issue, the NHTSA said, which could lead to them not being removed from service even if they pose a safety hazard.

Pirelli will notify owners of the affected tires, and dealers will replace these tires free of charge, according to the recall announcement. Owners may contact Pirelli customer service at 1-800-747-3554, and if they have further questions they can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
